Country Eco House
Mark has recently completed a 25,000 sq ft new build eco country house in North Yorkshire, which is owned by a private family who are philanthropists and major patrons of the Arts.
The six bedroom house has a ¾ circular design with basement and a garage that includes a full turning circle. It sits on four acres and took two years to build, completing in 2016. Mark worked closely with the architects and MGID designed the interiors to create a luxurious yet comfortable family home, which can also accommodate grand entertaining. The owners often host arts events with up to thirty for formal dining or 100 for a concert.
In addition to complete furnishings and wall coverings. Mark handled all the interior architecture: the entrance layouts; bathrooms; ceiling mouldings; door frames; stonework; cabinetry and swimming pool surround. Mark also sourced all decorative items and accessories and advised on the purchase of all artwork, which was done in conjunction with a renowned UK art dealer.
The main challenge was the curved design and the positioning of basins and mirrors in bathrooms had to accommodate the shape of the building. All furniture, rugs and cabinetry were bespoke and the large open spaces needed soft elements to help with the acoustics, such as large banquette sofas in the drawing room. Curtaining was kept very simple and carpeting was laid throughout the upstairs landings and bedrooms. A wall was created to house the AV system with a fireplace below. The eco credentials of this house are impressive: it is super insulated, triple glazed and has a combined heat and power plant.
Mark took his clients on an extensive trip to Paris to visit craftsmen and sculptors and to commission pieces for the house. Consequently there is a diverse selection of textiles form many European suppliers giving the design a distinct international flavour.
